The Lord’s Prayer (Sheppard)

"I BELIEVE there is no liturgy in the world
either in ancient or modern language, which
breathes more of a solid scriptural rational piety,
than the Common Prayer of the Church of England."

John Wesley, 1703-1791

A Collect for The Third Sunday In Lent

WE beseech thee, Almighty God, look upon the hearty desires of thy humble servants, and stretch forth the right hand of thy Majesty, to be our defence against all our enemies; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A Collect for the Season of Lent

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, who hatest nothing that thou hast made and dost forgive the sins of all them that are penitent; Create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we, worthily lamenting our sins, and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of thee, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Setting An Example By True Repentance

George Herbert (1593-1633)

THUS the parson, considering that repentance is the great virtue of the gospel, and one of the first steps of pleasing God, having for his own use examined the nature of it, is able to explain it after to others. And, particularly, having doubted sometimes, whether his repentance were true, or at least in that degree it ought to be,—since he found himself sometimes to weep more for the loss of some temporal things, than for offending God,—he came at length to this resolution, that repentance is an act of the mind, not of the body …

The Comfortable Words
COME unto me all that travail and are heavy laden, and I will refresh you. St. Matth. xi. 28.

So God loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son, to the end that all that believe in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. St. John iii. 16

Listen to The Lord's Prayer

OUR Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

The Litany
BY thine Agony and Bloody Sweat; by thy Cross and Passion; by thy precious Death and Burial; by thy glorious Resurrection and Ascension, and by the Coming of the Holy Ghost,
Good Lord, deliver us.

The Sublime Purpose Of Worship
PUBLIC worship is not a mere attendance at an appointed place to hear of God; it is the means vouchsafed to the elect of God of offering to the King of kings, in communion with all holy creatures, cherubim, and seraphim and all the hosts of heaven, the spiritual sacrifice of prayer and praise.
Walter Farquhar Hook (1798-1875)

The Triumph Of Hope
THE past is beyond recall. Put it behind you. The future is full of magnificent opportunities. Endeavour to realise them. Be energetic, be courageous, be hopeful. In the agony of your contrition, from the depths of your despair, listen to the Divine Voice which summons you: "Let the dead bury their dead; dead opportunities, dead regrets, dead failures; yes even, dead sins, and follow thou Me".
Bishop Joseph Lightfoot, 1828-1889

Christ In The Manger And The Sacrament
CHRIST in the Sacrament is not altogether unlike Christ in the cratch. To the cratch we may well like the husk or outward symbols of it. Outwardly it seems little worth but it is rich of contents, as was the crib this day with Christ in it.
Bishop Bishop Lancelot Andrewes, 1555-1626

More on The Presence of Christ

Charlotte Brontë, 1816-1855
"God surely did not create us, and cause us to live, with the sole end of wishing always to die. I believe, in my heart, we were intended to prize life and enjoy it, so long as we retain it."
(As Caroline Helstone in "Shirley")
