The Lenten Triodion, tr. Bishop Kallistos Ware & Mother Mary

THE LENTEN TRIODION, tr Bishop Kallistos Ware and Mother Mary (traditional English)

This book forms a sequel to The Festal Menaion. In The Lenten Triodion the translators have followed the same principles as in their earlier volume. The texts for the ten Sundays before Easter are given in full, together with the complete services for the first week of Lent, for Holy Week, and for certain other days.

The translation is designed for liturgical use, and is suited for singing and reading aloud.

In the introduction Bishop Kallistos describes the history and inner meaning of Lent, and asks how and why Christians fast.

The theology of the Orthodx East is expressed above all through its prayer. Here, in the services of the Lenten fast, there is set before us the whole story of man’s creation, his exile and his return to Paradise through repentance. Following Christ day by day from palm Sunday to Easter Eve, we see how man is reconciled to God through the sufferings and death of God Himself incarnate.
